Three years old, a high fever, and a frightened mother. What would once have meant hours of travel and waiting now had a quick answer — close to home
On January 13, 2026, FUNDESUR inaugurated the Clinical Analysis Laboratory in Nueva Concepción, El Triunfo — a long-awaited step forward for communities in southern Honduras. Just weeks later, that laboratory was already proving why it was so urgently needed.
From the community of Montelimar, in Namasigüe, came Belkis Vásquez and her young son Norlan Guevara, just three years old. Norlan was a child full of energy and warmth — until he began running high, persistent fevers that wouldn't break. With every passing hour, Belkis's worry grew deeper.

El valor de tener el laboratorio cerca
Because a laboratory was now within reach, a complete blood count was performed immediately. The result was clear: Norlan had dengue fever.
A fast diagnosis changed everything. At the health center, the appropriate treatment was started and his recovery was closely monitored. Three follow-up tests were conducted every other day, tracking his platelet levels with particular care.

Norlan's levels stabilized. Gradually, he regained his energy, his smile, and his eagerness to play.

"I no longer have to travel long distances, or spend money I don't have on transportation. I no longer live with the fear of arriving somewhere and finding no availability." — BELKIS VÁSQUEZ, NORLAN'S MOTHER
A relief that reaches beyond one family
For Belkis, having this laboratory nearby represents an enormous relief. Her story is not the exception — it reflects what thousands of families across southern Honduras faced every time they needed a diagnosis: long distances, unaffordable costs, and the uncertainty of not knowing whether care would be available upon arrival.
Today, thanks to the Clinical Analysis Laboratory in Nueva Concepción, that reality is changing
