When Dignity Takes Shape

Amanda’s Story in Montecristo

In Montecristo, Namasigüe, the morning arrives early. The sun begins to paint the zinc rooftops, and the sound of roosters marks the start of a new day. In one of those homes lives Amanda Maradiaga, alongside her husband Fausto Ayala and their daughter María a hardworking family accustomed to rising before the heat and facing each day with determination.

For years, Amanda’s home carried a silent need. It was not visible from the street. It was not obvious to anyone passing by. But it was there, shaping their daily routine: the lack of an adequate space for personal hygiene.

The latrine they used had reached the end of its lifespan. It no longer provided safety or dignified conditions. Bathing required improvisation. Washing clothes meant constant adjustments. Privacy was not guaranteed. And during the rainy season, the situation became even more challenging. It was not merely an inconvenience it was a constant limitation in something as fundamental as personal care.

Like many families in Montecristo, Amanda and Fausto prioritized what was urgent: food, education, the essentials needed to sustain their household. Building a sanitary module was on their list of hopes, but not on their list of immediate possibilities.

Yet there are moments when communities begin to write a new chapter.

Through the sanitary modules program, FUNDESUR delivered 20 comprehensive solutions within the community. It was not simply about infrastructure. It was about access to a fundamental right. It was about transforming conditions that for years had seemed unchangeable.

The day construction began at Amanda’s home felt different. Every block laid represented more than cement and mortar. It represented safety. It represented health. It represented respect for a family’s privacy.

Today, the sanitary module is an essential part of their home — a solid, secure space designed for bathing, washing, and caring for personal hygiene with peace of mind. María can use it without fear. Amanda can carry out her daily tasks more comfortably. Fausto knows his family now lives in safer, healthier conditions.

The change is not loud. It does not come with grand ceremonies. It reveals itself in everyday moments: in a door that closes properly, in a clean floor, in the confidence of knowing that home protects in every sense.

When communities gain access to adequate conditions, dignity ceases to be an abstract concept and becomes a lived experience. It becomes well-being. Autonomy. Preventive health. Peace of mind.

In Montecristo, 20 families now live this transformation. And in Amanda’s home, that transformation has a face, a name, and a purpose.

Because dignity is also built.

It is built through concrete actions. It is built through sustainable solutions. It is built in every home where a safe space for personal care now exists.

And when that happens, it is not only a house that changes.

It changes the way a family lives its present…and envisions its future.
